When the Swimming Analysis Grid Is Empty: Vietnam Is Lacking Data, Not Stories
| Trạng thái: N/A – thiếu dữ liệu.
One afternoon at a swimming pool in Nha Trang, a young coach pointed to the water and said: “No need for data. Just swim and you will see.” It sounded like professional confidence, but to someone who has spent years between a microphone and a stopwatch, I understood it as a way of hiding a blind spot.
When I was asked to analyze a swimming topic using a nine-section expert framework, I prepared my notes, my terminology table and my habit of cross-checking facts. Yet every box in the framework returned “N/A – insufficient information.” There was no event, no result, no athlete identity. A careless writer could have invented a dramatic race. I did not. An empty analysis is not the failure of the writer. It is a mirror reflecting a system that is not yet ready.
Swimming is a linear sport. Every meter must be measured in seconds. Every underwater phase has distance. Every wall turn creates a loss of speed. We cannot talk about progress without 50-meter splits. We cannot judge tactics without stroke-rate data. Without all of that, every statement is only emotion wearing the costume of analysis.
In Vietnamese swimming, the problem is not a lack of talent. It is a lack of transparent performance data. A swimmer can win a SEA Games gold medal, but at the Olympic level the first question is not courage; it is how far his split times are from the A standard. If the sport federation only publishes final results and keeps technical records inside coaches’ notebooks, the whole ecosystem remains blind.
We Vietnamese fans often demand bold conclusions. But a mature sports culture must accept the answer: “We do not have enough data yet.” Writing a false sentence is more dangerous than writing nothing. Writing is a commitment to truth, not a guessing game.
I think about how a player can only speak when the ball is between his foot and the writer’s curiosity. In swimming, an athlete can only be understood when his body is translated into measurable numbers. Every sport is its own universe, and I am lucky to be a traveler between those orbits. But even the most passionate traveler cannot draw a map from a blank page.
That is why my original swimming analysis ended with no conclusions. It ended with N/A in every box. But inside that emptiness is an invitation: I want to see Vietnam build an open swimming database where any journalist can trace a swimmer’s splits from age sixteen to adulthood. Until then, an honest article is worth far more than a thousand imagined ones.
