Chuncheon 2026: Nguyen Thien Phung Holds the Rhythm as Vietnam Retains Mixed Pair U50 Poomsae Gold

Morning in Chuncheon, the arena lights not yet fully up. On the mat, two Vietnamese athletes stand about two metres apart. Hands closed at the correct angle, eyes forward, breathing even. No opponent in front of them to strike. Nobody to knock out. There is a scoreboard, a judging panel, and just under three minutes to prove that two bodies can move as one.

I was in the press section, close to the front row. The person beside me leafed through the programme, reading out the pairs. Nguyen Thi Le Kim and Nguyen Thien Phung. Two years earlier, in Hong Kong, the name next to Phung was Chau Tuyet Van. This year the partner changed. The one holding the rhythm did not.

Vietnam's first gold of the 2026 World Poomsae Championships came in the mixed pair, Under-50 age division, recognized poomsae. After beating Myanmar, Chinese Taipei, Turkey and Iran on the road to the final, the pair coached by Nguyen Thanh Huy defeated Denmark to top a field of 27 pairs. A dressing room does not lie, it only whispers. What it whispered in Chuncheon differed quite a lot from the roar outside.

In poomsae, results are not decided by a kick to the head or a submission hold. Athletes perform prescribed forms, and scoring splits into two parts: execution accuracy and presentation, covering speed, power, rhythm and expression of energy. Judges sit opposite, mark, and the outcome is compiled by a panel. A stray hand angle is enough to lose points, but that error draws no blood.

The World Poomsae Championships are staged biennially by World Taekwondo. The 2026 edition was held in Hong Kong, China. The 2026 edition took place in Chuncheon, South Korea. Events cover individual, mixed pair and team categories, split by age division U30, U40 and U50, not by weight class as in kyorugi sparring. The rhythm-keeper of Vietnam's mixed pair programme is Nguyen Thien Phung, now a two-time world mixed pair U50 champion with two different partners. In 2026 Phung partnered Chau Tuyet Van. In 2026 coach Nguyen Thanh Huy replaced Van with Nguyen Thi Le Kim. The result did not change.

Swapping a partner in the pair event is not like changing a footballer. Here the entire form is marked on how two people fit together. When one half is new, the whole rhythm has to be rebuilt: strike timing, kick height, movement speed, balance on the finish. The new pair had only a fixed preparation window before stepping onto the Chuncheon mat. That Le Kim and Phung still won is a stronger signal than a settled pair defending successfully. It suggests the coaching staff possess not merely one good pair, but a working mechanism for building pairs.

Behind that result sits a load problem. Nguyen Thi Le Kim did not only contest the mixed pair. She was also part of the women's team trio competing the very next day. She carries the heaviest competitive load in the squad and is the central link in the succession plan. Chau Tuyet Van, now at the U40 ceiling, simultaneously entered two brackets: individual U40 and pair/team U50. Lien Thi Tuyet Mai featured in the women's team group.

Van's dual-bracket presence is a notable signal about career length. In combat disciplines, athletes usually leave the mat when reflexes and durability decline. In forms, the limits sit in joints, tendons and flexibility, which degrade far more slowly. Poomsae age brackets extend beyond 65 internationally, so Van's career horizon is not urgent. That she appears in both U40 and U50 in a single championship shows the staff betting on the categories with the highest medal probability.

Le Kim is the pivotal link of the new cycle. She carried the gold-winning mixed pair and appeared in the women's team trio. This is a veteran-plus-successor squad model: Van anchors the individual and team events, Le Kim absorbs the higher load as the successor, and Phung is the fixed axis of the pair. Le Kim's load is a strength, and also a risk if she is injured. From the outside this looks like an individual shining. From the inside it looks like a squad rotating on purpose.

I do not score goals, but I remember every breath of the crowd. In Chuncheon that breath came after the Vietnamese pair finished their form and stood waiting for the marks, a silence longer than any passage of play.

The strangest element of this medal lies in a line the domestic reporting itself raised: the bracket contained no Korean athlete.

That detail is easily missed but structurally significant. Poomsae originated in Korea, the ruleset is shaped by a world federation headquartered in Korea, and Korean athletes have long been the benchmark of the discipline. A mixed pair U50 bracket staged in Chuncheon itself without a host representative is unusual, even if it stems from entry allocation or division prioritisation.

That does not diminish the gold. It only adjusts how the gold is read. A world title won in a bracket missing the discipline's benchmark nation is a genuine achievement, but it is not yet proof of parity with that nation.

A second confusion needs clearing. The phrase 'first gold' refers to Vietnam's first gold of the 2026 edition, not the first world title in history. In the mixed pair U50, Vietnam already won in Hong Kong 2026. This is a title defence. The framing is not wrong, but it is easily misread as a historic breakthrough.

One further layer: forms is a judged discipline, and scores are not published. The Vietnamese pair's path to the final crossed four continental unions: Myanmar and Chinese Taipei, Turkey, Iran, then Denmark in the final. That is a diverse path, enough to say this was no soft bracket. But with no scores, no margins and no seeding information on opponents, the degree of dominance remains unknown.

The ball rolls across two generations, and my job is to catch the right moment of the drop. In poomsae that drop is not a goal, but the instant two partners stop at exactly the same time.

What matters in the next cycle is not the medal but the pairing. If Phung and Le Kim stay together and improve their presentation marks, Vietnam has a stable axis for several seasons. If the staff keeps rotating half the pair, that is a sign of squad depth.

The genuinely open question remains: when the bracket includes Korea in full, where will Nguyen Thanh Huy's pair stand?
